July 2014

July brought our final sports day. It was perfect weather and the pupils from year one and two were raring to begin after lunch, wearing their strand colour t shirts. The younger children were supported by our very own year four sports leaders and also by the year 8 sports leaders from Dorchester Middle School (many old pupils from Damers) It was so lovely to welcome them back to us again. Key stage one took part in a range of multi skills activities, including running, throwing at targets, jumping, and dribbling. There were lots of smiles during the afternoon and the children enjoyed competing against the other strand teams.

Congratulations to the Damers Football team who attended the football competition at Broadmayne on the last evening of the half term. This was a mixture of Year 3 and 4 players. They played some fantastic football and yet again were a super example of the talent that Damers has!

You’ve most likely seen our playground transformed to an amazing show of bikes, trikes, scooters and even a unicycle!  We have been taking part in the The Big Pedal that encourages children and adults to walk, cycle or scoot into school.  We’re proud to announce that we finished an impressive FIRST in Dorset! For finishing first, we won 3 balance bikes and an amazing stunt show display team will be visiting us in the summer term (funded by Sustrans).

As well as having fun and being healthy, there were some amazing prizes up for grabs just for Damers. We’d like to say a huge thank you to local businesses, Mud Sweat n Gears and Poundbury Cyclesport for their generosity and donations.

This year, to support Sport Relief 2014, the whole school from Foundation to Year 4 will be having a Swimathon! During the week beginning 17th March, each will swim as many widths/lengths as possible. Which colour strand will swim the furthest? What distance will the whole school swim over the entire week? Watch this space! Sponsorship forms will be coming home before the half term holidays should you wish to sponsor your child for this event.

As part of the transition to Dorchester Middle School, our Year 4 pupils set off for a morning of Orienteering with their class teachers.  This festival was run by the Year 8 Sports Leaders and will help the children to be more familiar with their new school surroundings.

Year 3 were delighted to welcome professional dancers, Charlie and Ross, to teach us how to Lindy Hop.  First they demonstrated Lindy Hopping and then Charlie took us through the basic steps – the rock step, the skip step, the Scratch, the Mess Around, the Applejack and the Shortie George.  Red 3 learnt the Mess Around dance, Blue 3 learnt the Applejack dance and Yellow 3 learnt the Shortie George. The children found it exhilarating and exhausting dancing for an hour non-stop and were inspired by having professional dancers in, who, as Mrs Simmonds put it, “dance for a job”.

November 2013

November has been a very busy month for sporting festivals amongst all of the DASP schools.

basketballWe began with a Tag Rugby festival on the 14th November which was held at Dorchester Rugby Club. Damers took along an enthusiastic team of ten year 4 children who loved both the skills sessions led by Mr Daileys year 8 sports leaders and later the competitive games against the other schools. Our team came second overall and were really proud of how well they had played. Some of these children went on to win golden tickets because of their fabulous team playing.

multi-skillsOn Tuesday 19th November, 12 children from year 1 and 2 were chosen to represent Damers at the Multi skills final, held at Dorchester Middle School. The pupils took part in a whole range of skills testing their agility, balance and coordination. At the end, the scores were counted up, and to our delight we brought home the winning certificate for the second year running. Well done!

On Wednesday 27th November, a keen and eager team of players attended the Basketball festival at St Osmunds School. This was an opportunity for all pupils to really show off their basketball skills and the pupils from Damers did just that! Our team won the first 6 matches basketball2without conceding any baskets. Unfortunately, they lost the last match which gave us second place overall. Mr Duffy (Olympic legacy sport leader) claimed our final match was, “one of the best and more exciting games that I have ever seen by this age group.”

dec danceYear 3 have been reading The legend of King Arthur, and were invited to perform the dance ‘At the court of the King’.  All of the  children were incredibly excited about performing on the stage at the Thomas Hardye School Theatre.  Well done to Mrs Simmonds for creating such a masterpiece!
